ABOUT STEVE RIX
Steve is a project manager by trade and has been a resident of Commerce Township for 18 years. He is Veteran, a husband, a father, and is known to many as Coach Rix, having coached youth baseball for many years. Steve is looking forward to working hard for Walled Lake families!
My wife, Nicole and I have been happily married for 18 years. Together, we have a 16 year old son, Owen. He is a junior at Walled Lake Northern. Owen has attended Walled Lake Schools his whole life. His passion for learning and athletics has driven us to look for ways to help him achieve his goals. This led me to coaching his baseball and basketball teams starting when he was four years old. I’ve had the pleasure of coaching many of his fellow classmates along the way. I also held a position on the Lakes Area Baseball board and helped them start a summer and fall baseball league to not only extend the fun of playing the game but also develop skills needed to get to the next level.
It was my son that got me to attend my first school board meeting. He gave a speech to the board with some of his teammates about the poor condition of our baseball and softball fields and asked the board to consider looking at installing turf fields. The following interactions we had with the board made me realize that I could be an asset to the board and to the community by utilizing my background as a Project Manager and Senior Estimator for a mechanical contractor to help work through projects as our district evolves. If I am elected to the Walled Lake School Board, I will make sure our contracts are bid out with the proper scopes of work and hold contractors accountable.
My son has gone from Kindergarten into his Junior Year of High School in the Walled Lake School District. During that time, I have been able to see some of the good and bad of our education system. It is my goal to ensure we have the proper technology available for students to flourish as they pursue careers beyond college campuses. I would like to ensure that our students and staff have a safe and secure working environment. I want to empower our students so that they can become tomorrow’s leaders.
Embracing Change and Embracing Challenges helps a person learn that they can do anything and I want to help our district get Back to Basics so that we can help our students learn to embrace change and embrace challenges to prepare them for the future.
